- Head over to Steam to download the disk image.
- If you’re using Windows, navigate to Rufus to create a boot drive.
- If you’re on Linux, you can use Balena Etcher.
- Select the recovery file.
- Choose your USB drive.
- This process will format your USB drive, so make sure you have everything on it stored somewhere else just in case.
- Plug in the USB drive using the USB-C adapter.
- Ensure the Steam Deck is turned off.
- Hold down the Power and Volume Down buttons.
- Let go of the buttons when you hear a chime.
- You will now be in the Boot Manager.
- In the Boot Manager, choose “EFI USB Device.”
- The screen will go black from a period of time.
- You’ll be booted into a desktop. Use the trackpad and trigger to navigate.

Reinstall SteamOS
Reinstalling the SteamOS will do just that, reinstall the OS. Using this method, you can try to keep your game library and other data intact.

Selecting this method will open the ability to make adjustments to the Steam Deck boot partition and is recommended for those who are comfortable tinkering further.
