Nintendo released its financial report for Q2 2021, which ended on Sept. 30, earlier today. And along with the Nintendo Switch hitting 92.87 million units sold, Pokémon Sword and Shield have sold a total of 22.64 million copies lifetime. 

This puts the newest mainline entries in the franchise just 1.1 million copies shy of surpassing the Game Boy Color’s Pokémon Gold and Silver versions 23.73 million copies sold, which are the second best-selling titles in the series—only trailing the original Pokémon Red, Blue, and Green’s 31.05 million copies sold. 

At the end of Q1 2021, Sword and Shield had just surpassed 21 million copies, meaning the game continues to sell slightly over 1 million units per results period. This makes catching Gold and Silver’s lifetime total very obtainable for the eighth generation titles.

Additionally, Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee is also still selling copies, totaling just over 500,000 additional copies to go from 13.28 million to 13.83 million copies sold lifetime. New Pokémon Snap has also sold 2.19 million copies since launching in April, though that doesn’t include Japanese sales figures. 

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are the next entries in the series, releasing for Switch worldwide on Nov. 19, followed by Pokémon Legends: Arceus on Jan. 28, 2022.
