What is the Ascendant Challenge this week in Destiny 2?

September 2022 · 5 minute read

Ascendant Challenges are one of the several moving parts involving the Dreaming City’s intricate Curse, which envelops the area in a three-week time loop. The curse ranges from weak to strong to strongest, and each cycle brings players a ton of treasure to hunt for—if they’re brave enough to dive into the Ascendant Plane in search of riches, that is.

Destiny 2 has a total of six Ascendant Challenges, which rotate every week. They’re a surefire source of Dreaming City gear, including reissued versions of Waking Vigil, Tigerspite, and Twilight Oath. Finishing an Ascendant Challenge grants a piece of Legendary gear, but players can get their hands on an extra drop if they have Petra Venj’s weekly bounty.

Ascendant Challenges yield one piece of gear each week, plus another from Petra’s bounties. Those objectives are character-based, meaning that players can get six pieces of Dreaming City gear from Ascendant Challenges alone.

To find the entrance to the Ascendant Challenge, players must consume an item called Tincture of Queensfoil, available from Petra for 50 Baryon Boughs or found in chests throughout the Dreaming City. Each Ascendant Challenge will have its own entrance, and though the challenge itself changes every week, its entrance will remain in the same spot whenever it pops up.

Getting to the Ascendant Challenge

Like Agonarch Abyss, the entrance to the Cimmerian Garrison Ascendant Challenge is also inside a Lost Sector—in this case, Chamber of Starlight.

Run through the Lost Sector normally and you’ll find the Ascendant Portal on top of a ledge at the very end of the activity, where a couple of Hobgoblins spawn (and where an Overload Champion spawns in the Legend version). You don’t have to finish the Lost Sector for this, but with a little luck, you’ll have a Petra bounty for completing Chamber of Starlight too.

Completing the Ascendant Challenge

Cimmerian Garrison feels more like an obstacle course than an Ascendant Challenge. In addition to fumbling your way around the confusing path, you’ll also have three furious Abyssal Knights on your heels and a small army of adds spread out along the way. We recommend bringing something for mid or long range and a sword.

Although the path is fairly linear, you could still lose your way if you pay too much attention to the enemies or get booped by one of the Taken holes that can send you to your death and have you restart the challenge.

From where you spawn in, stay on the path until you see some enemies with a Shrieker. Take them out, then make a right and defeat another Shrieker and a group of Thralls with it. Make another right and stick to the path, taking out the adds. You’ll end up on a small platform with three Taken Phalanxes, and this is a sign that you’re going the right way.

After you kill the Phalanxes and progress, the Abyssal Knights will spawn in again, and this time they’ll be faster on your tail. Run up the stairs and take out the Acolyte’s Eyes, then stick to the path. You’ll spot a platforming puzzle up ahead, and that’s where you need to go to finish the challenge. Keep in mind that most of the rocks and platforms rotate, so don’t stand on them for too long. The ledges with the lanterns on them, however, seem safe. Follow the path until you reach a floating islet.

Once you get to the last platform, you’ll have a few adds and a boss. Unleash your Super for damage and finish the enemies off with your sword (or your Heavy weapon of choice), then grab the chest and head out the newly opened portal. If you have Petra’s bounty for finishing the Ascendant Challenge, you’ll get another piece of gear.

How to get Dreaming City gear?

Destiny 2 has introduced two new ways to get Dreaming City gear: the Blind Well now awards guaranteed Dreaming City loot, and the War Table lets players focus an Umbral Embram into a Dreaming City Engram. That said, the Ascendant Challenge and Petra’s stock also let players get a few more pieces, though these are subjected to weekly lockouts.

Petra offers a weekly bounty for completing the Ascendant Challenge, which will award you with an extra piece of gear for your trouble. Each week, she’ll also offer a bounty that costs Dark Fragments and yields an Offering to the Oracle. Taking the reward to the Oracle in the Spine of Keres will give you an extra drop and, on weeks where the Curse is strongest, will let you visit Queen Mara Sov’s throne room. You can also find an Ahamkara Bone there if you’re hunting for Cursebreaker.

In addition, check out Petra’s bounties every day for a daily objective that also gives out gear, as seen in its tooltip. (Challenge: The Shattered has been broken for some time, however, so don’t get your hopes up.) Finishing eight daily bounties and doing Petra’s weekly quest will also yield Dreaming City gear if you have bought the objectives from her inventory. Like Ascendant Challenges, these are on a weekly lockout per character, meaning you can accomplish them more than once a week as long as you’re not running the same guardian.
